Founded by the Saxon amidst green valleys and wooded hills, Sherborne is a mellow-stoned pageant of history. It boasts famous schools, 15th century almshouse and two castles.
Sherborne is an excellent place to buy that unusual gift. Here you will find delightful and varied shopping, handcrafted goods and elegant fashions. It’s a thriving cultural centre, with a myriad of antique shops. Markets are held by ‘The Conduit’ on Thursdays and Saturdays. A Farmers’ Market is held on the third Friday in each month.
In 705 AD the kingdom of Wessex was divided into two dioceses and St Aldhelm chose Sherborne as the site of his cathedral. The fine Abbey Church replaced the Saxon Cathedral and stands as a monument to the craftsmanship of 12th century masons with some of the finest fan tracery in the world. The old Conduit near the Abbey was once used as a washing area for the monks. An unusually complete example of a 15th century almshouse lies in the shadows of the abbey.
Visit the fascinating Sherborne Castles, old and new! Take a look inside Sherborne Abbey to see it’s impressive fan-vaulted roof. Nearby you’ll find the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
